Graduation Requirements

These requirements are set by the State of Minnesota and the local Board of Education.

1. Certain subjects are required of all students in grades 9-12. To graduate, you must enroll in and successfully complete the courses listed below.

Students in the Class of 2008 need a minimum of 58 credits to graduate.

  • 8 Credits in Language Arts
  • 9 Credits in Social Studies  
  • 7 Credits in Mathematics
  • 6 Credits in Science
  • 1 Credit in Health
  • 3 Credits in Physical Education
  • 1 Credit in Career Investigation  
  • 2 Credits in The Arts
  • 21 or more electives

Students in the Class of 2009 need a minimum of 62 credits to graduate:

  • 9 Credits in Language Arts
  • 10 Credits in Social Studies  
  • 8 Credits in Mathematics
  • 7 Credits in Science
  • 1 Credit in Health
  • 3 Credits in Physical Education
  • 1 Credit in Career Investigation  
  • 2 Credits in The Arts
  • 21 or more electives

Students in the Class of 2010 and the Class of 2011 need a minimum of 66 credits to graduate:

  • 10 Credits in Language Arts
  • 10 Credits in Social Studies  
  • 9 Credits in Mathematics
  • 7 Credits in Science
  • 1 Credit in Health
  • 3 Credits in Physical Education
  • 1 Credit in Career Investigation  
  • 2 Credits in The Arts
  • 23 or more electives

2. In addition to course requirements, students must show competency through the Basic Standards Tests (BSTs) OR the Graduation-Required Assessments for Diploma (GRAD Exams):

Classes of 2008 - 2009 must pass the BSTs:

  • Mathematics: Scaled Score 600+
  • Reading: Scaled Score 600+
  • Writing: 3 or above
  • Classes of 2010 - 2011 must pass the GRAD exams:

  • Writing: Grade 9
  • Reading: Grade 10
  • Mathematics: Grade 11
    *Passing scores have not yet been determined
